THE MODERNA EXHIBITION 2010
2 Oct, 2010 – 9 January, 2011
Curators: Fredrik Liew with Lisa Rosendahl and Gertrud Sandqvist
The Moderna Exhibition is a recurring exhibition of contemporary art in Sweden presented every four years by Moderna Museet. Our ambition is to create an open forum for discussion about Swedish contemporary art. The first Moderna Exhibition was held in 2006, and in 106 days we will again explore what is going on in studios, offices, workshops, and art institutions .
Fredrik Liew:
“Our research was based on a few primary questions: What is life in Sweden like today? And how is this reflected in art? What constitutes the contemporary role of the artist? Is there a prevailing trend? Can we even speak of ’Swedish contemporary art’, in today’s globalised world, and if so, what defines it?”
The answers to these questions are delivered by 54 artists (28 women, 26 men) who are all part of the Swedish art scene today. They are born and live in various places, both in Sweden and abroad. Some have been active for many years, while others recently graduated from school. These artists create paintings, sculptures, videos and photos, but are also engaged in artistic research and social studies. Several of the featured works were created specifically for the Moderna Exhibition 2010.
“There is no single theme for this exhibition. Instead, the principle behind our presentation is to focus on a larger number of constellations, encounters or contexts. Altogether, the exhibition, like my own perspective on art, is based on mutually enhancing differences,” Fredrik Liew continues.
The themes covered include authorship, narrative, past versus present, the ephemeral and spiritual, revisiting the modernist idiom, activism, and the processing of the concept of Sweden. Together, the artists’ works form a cross-section of what we call Swedish art in the 2010s, where the curators have selected the works they find the most interesting.
