New book! Another Story
Photography from the Moderna Museet Collection
Moderna Museet has one of the finest collections of photography in Europe. Many historically momentous photographers are featured in the collection, which comprises some 100,000 images covering the entire history of photography – from the 1840s until today. The book Another Story presents a selection of these and highlights works by pioneers such as Julia Margaret Cameron, Félix Tournachon Nadar and Carleton E. Watkins, representatives of the pictorialist era, classic photographers like Diane Arbus, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Irving Penn, August Sander and Christer Strömholm, and a few seminal artists of our time who, like Cindy Sherman, have explored the potential of the camera.
– This is the second book in a series on photography published together with the German publishing company Steidl. The first book, Reality Revisited. Photography from the Moderna Museet Collection, was published in 2010, says Anna Tellgren, curator of photography at Moderna Museet.
The book is being published in conjunction with the Moderna Museet’s re-hanging of the permanent collection exhibition in 2011, focusing on photography. The re-hanging has been carried out in three stages. The first, Another Story: Possessed by the Camera, opened in February, presenting contemporary photographic art. 16 April was the opening date for the second part, Another Story: See the World! which presents the period 1920-1980. In November, finally, we take a look at the birth and early years of photography. Another Story: Written in Light features the pioneers of photography from 1840 to the first three decades of the 20th century. In autumn 2011 and until the end of the year, the permanent collection exhibition will feature photography and photographic art only. From autumn 2011 to February 2012, the entire permanent collection exhibition will consist of photography and photographic art.
