Drawings and prints
Moderna Museet has some 12,000 drawings and watercolours, 15,000 prints, 5,000 posters, and a small number of artist’s books. These works are mainly by Swedish artists, but a few of the major artists of the West are also represented, for instance, Pablo Picasso, Edvard Munch and Jean Fautrier. Among the Swedish artists, Axel Fridell, Karl Isakson, Vera Nilsson and Lennart Rodhe are amply represented, enabling qualified studies of their work processes. Moderna Museet is also the keeper of the King Gustav VI Adolf collection of drawings by artists who were considered promising in his days.
The drawings and prints were transferred from Nationalmuseum to Moderna Museet in 1998, so that works by modern and contemporary artists would be collected in one institution. Due to the sheer quantity of works, and their sensitivity to strong light, only a small number are shown in the permanent exhibition – In Our Time. Researchers and other interested parties are welcome to study drawings and prints in our research department subject to prior agreement.
