Painting by Malevitj!
In February 2004, the extraordinary suprematist painting "Black and White. Suprematist Composition, 1915" by Kasimir Malevich was donated to Moderna Museet. The donators, Jelena and Bengt Jangfeldt, received the painting as a gift from the Russian art historian Nikolai Khardzhiev, who died in 1996.
Since 18 January, 2005, the painting has been exhibited as part of the museum’s permanent exhibition, in the company of works by Malevich’s peers, Tatlin, Rodchenko, Kliun and, not forgetting, the painting by Malevich that is already in the collection, Portrait of Una, from 1930-33.
“The addition of one single painting can do wonders for a collection. With this fantastic donation of a classic suprematist painting by Malevich, Russian avant-garde art will be excellently represented at Moderna Museet,” says Lars Nittve, Director of Moderna Museet.
