Lina Selander at Venice Biennale in 2015 & Okwui Enwezor visits Moderna Museet

Moderna Museet, Stockholm

Moderna Museet will feature Lina Selander at the Venice Biennale in 2015. Selander will be representing Sweden with a solo exhibition in the Arsenale. Moreover, the artistic director of the Venice Biennale, Okwui Enwezor, will come to Moderna Museet to hold a lecture on 20 September, 2014. Enwezor’s visit in Stockholm is co-organised with Iaspis, the Swedish Arts Grants Committee’s International Program.

“I am delighted that Lina Selander’s oeuvre is being presented to a large international audience. Okwui Enwezor’s lecture in Stockholm is of interest to anyone wishing to expand their horizons beyond the habitual art perspective,” says Daniel Birnbaum, director of the Moderna Museet.

Lina Selander – Venice Biennale 9 May – 22 November, 2015
Lina Selander is one of Sweden’s most innovative moving image artists. Her films and installations often focus on junctures in history where a system or physical place collapses and something new begins to emerge; the narrative of mechanical cinema giving way to that of digital video, or a political or economic system plummeting into a new one. Her works revolve around images as memories, imprints and representations. Selander’s process is similar to that of the scientist or poet. Each work constitutes a dense archive of facts and observations, occasionally in dialogue with other films, works of art or literature. The precise, rhythmic editing and use of sound in her films generate a unique temporality and strong internal pressure, and take intuitive leaps between associations and meanings.

Lina Selander was born in 1973 in Stockholm, where she still lives and works. She will be present at Okwui Enwezor’s lecture on 20 September. Selander’s exhibition at the Venice Biennale will be presented in greater detail at a press event in spring 2015. The Moderna Museet’s curator for the exhibition of Lina Selander in Venice is Lena Essling, and the commissioner is Ann-Sofi Noring.

Okwui Enwezor – lecture on 20 September at 2.00 pm.
Okwui Enwezor is the curator of the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015. At the Moderna Museet Enwezor will deliver a lecture on Intense Proximity: Contemporary Art between the near & the far. The lecture is part of the Moderna Museet’s series A Larger World, with talks by international curators and artists who share their perspectives and experiences from working with art on all the continents. Today, there is no longer one dominating centre for art in the way that Paris and New York once were; instead, differences between languages and traditions are bridged. Artists are perpetually on the move, between languages and continents, from one centre to the next. In these times, art museums need to reconsider their activities, what they show and collect and what they discuss.

Okwui Enwezor was born in Calabar, Nigeria, in 1963. He is the director of Haus der Kunst in Munich and the curator of the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015. Enwezor is the founding editor of Nka: Journal of Contemporary African Art. He lives and works in Munich and New York.
