Press preview of Marcel Duchamp and Early Modernism

Marcel Duchamp
19 March-11 September, 2011
Early Modernism: 1900-1920 from the Moderna Museet Collection
19 March, 2011-8 April, 2012

Curator: Magnus Jensner

Today, Marcel Duchamp is regarded as one of the most prominent and innovative artists of the 20th century, and his famous work Fountain was selected as the most influential work of the 1900s. Starting on 19 March, 14 of his works, including The Large Glass, will be shown at Moderna Museet Malmö. Another exhibition will open simultaneously, featuring works from the Moderna Museet collection by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Edvard Munch and Sigrid Hjertén.

Opening this spring and ending in early autumn, Moderna Museet presents a unique artist who perpetually broke new ground throughout his oeuvre. Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) emphasised the importance of the concept in a work of art and pioneered open art, where the interpretation of the viewer or posterity contributes to the creative act and thus to the meaning of the work. Moderna Museet has one of the world’s finest collections of Marcel Duchamp’s art, and fourteen of these works, including Fountain, 3 Standard Stoppages, The Bride Stripped Bare By Her Bachelors, even (The Large Glass) and The Bicycle Wheel, will be shown at Moderna Museet Malmö.

Alongside Duchamp, we will highlight works from Moderna Museet’s rich collection in an exhibition titled Early Modernism. In the latter half of the 19th century, the rules and norms governing visual arts were dissolved and replaced by a wide array of artistic possibilities, where small constellations of artists fought for new, revolutionary ideas. The exhibition presents the early modernist phase through works by Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Henri Matisse, Wassily Kandinsky, Siri Derkert, Nell Walden, Sonia Delaunay, Edvard Munch, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and many others.

Both Marcel Duchamp and Early Modernism will be shown on Floor 2 in the museum, meaning that the entire upper story will be devoted to carefully selected works from the rich and varied Moderna Museet collection.

On the opening day, Saturday, 19 March, at 2 pm, Magnus Jensner will open the exhibition with an introduction to the two new exhibitions from the collection.

Moderna Museet Malmö’s presentation of the collection is sponsored by Deloitte.
