EDITION No 4 2014 GEORGES ADÉAGBO

Georges Adéagbo was born in 1942 in Cotonou, Benin. He creates site-specific installations where news cuttings, posters, books, postcards, clothes and his own hand-written texts are interwoven with sculptures and paintings from Benin into complex three-dimensional collages.

Adéagbo’s works have been shown internationally since the 1990s and especially since his participation in the Venice Biennale in 1999. He bases his work on the city that has invited him, exploring and examining its architecture, history, culture and the myriad of other aspects that make up the identity of a place. With chains of association, autobiographical references, and translations of culture, he creates what he calls an “archaeology of knowledge”, which generates new narratives.

EDITION No 3 2014 GABRIEL OROZCO

Gabriel Orozco was born in Mexico in 1962 and lives in Paris, New York and Mexico City. He is one of the most widely recognised artists of his generation. His oeuvre opens up for a new form of conceptualism that embraces both deep contemplation and precise craftsmanship. When asked by the Moderna Museet’s co-director Ann-Sofi Noring if Tree Lines can be regarded as a self-portrait, Gabriel Orozco replied:

Ha! Well, Tree Lines has all the simplicity and flow I search for, it is the contrary to symmetry on one hand but on the other, symmetry and flow are dependent on each other. In my work, trees have always been important and this is a reason for me to give you this.”
  • Edition: Gabriel Orozco, Tree Lines 2014. Signed and numbered edition of 99 prints. Inkjet print on paper 55.9 x 74.5 cm. The prints are sold unframed in a specially designed tube.

Tala Madani, Shadow, 2013

EDITION No 2 2013 TALA MADANI

Tala Madani conjures up enigmatic situations where anonymous middle-aged men inhabit her painted canvases and animations. Madani deconstructs roles and stereotypes, revealing structures of power and identity. By introducing more universal social issues and philosophical questions in her work, she describes and comments on an intricate and fragile masculinity in a society where women appear to be entirely absent. In Madani’s paintings and other works, which oscillate between figuration and abstraction, she uncovers complex structures, and emotions are layered to undermine the given outcome.

In the edition for Friends of Moderna Museet, we recognise the themes from Tala Madani’s Jinn series. According to Arabic folklore and the Quran, jinns are a kind of accompanying spirit. In this work they could be seen as a possibly bad conscience, or the Id – the part of our psyche representing our urges and impulses. In Shadow (2013) a man is trying to strangle his own shadow. Perhaps this is the same man who is laughed at by his own shadow in a work from 2011 with the same title. Out of fear – or shame – the man is now attacking his own inner being – the part that many of us have wanted at times to hide from others.

Tala Madani was born in Teheran, Iran, in 1981, and moved with her mother to the USA in her teens. She now lives and works in Los Angeles. She has a degree in political science at Oregon State University, USA, and completed her Masters degree in art at Yale University School of Art in 2006. The exhibition Rip Image at the Moderna Museet is the most comprehensive presentation of her oeuvre to date.

Wolfgang Tillmans, Process (apple tree), 2012

EDITION No 1 2012 WOLFGANG TILLMANS

In the late 1980s, Tillmans began creating images using a monochrome laser copier, and was one of the first artists to explore how images are transmitted through different media and distribution channels. After studying in the UK, he became a trendsetting photographer in publications such as i-D and Interview. The magazine features were a way for him to work simultaneously on exhibition spaces and printed media and to challenge conventions. His emblematic images are now considered to epitomise a young generation in the 1990s, and raise questions about subcultures and gender. Since then, Tillmans’ practice has developed in several directions, moving from still-lifes, landscapes and portraits, to abstract, monumental works, and back again.

In abstract images that relate more closely to a painterly tradition, he explores photography as a self-reflecting medium. These works, which are produced in the darkroom, balance between intention and chance. Since 1995, Wolfgang Tillmans has practised an exhibition strategy based on a constant renegotiation of subjects and dimensions. By taking on the entire space, and installing his images in new contexts and constellations, he creates exhibitions that are site-specific, each one specially designed for the gallery or institution in question.
