New works in the Moderna Museet Collection
Purchases and donations in 2024
– Being an actively collecting museum is central to the DNA of Moderna Museet. All the acquisitions for the collection are made possible through donations and foundation grants. We are proud to have expanded the collection with so many central works in 2024, Museum Director Gitte Ørskou says.
New acquisitions in ongoing and upcoming exhibitions
Examples of new acquisitions in 2024 include “Ghosts” (2021) by Maurizio Cattelan, “Home” (2023) by Rashid Johnson and “Cretan’s Mysteries” (1980) by Monica Sjöö, all of which have been shown in different exhibitions at Moderna Museet over the past two years.
Some of the new additions are currently shown in ongoing exhibitions. For example, “At Land” (1944) by Maya Derens in the exhibition “The Underground Sky” at Moderna Museet in Stockholm (until 11 January 2026) and “River Rock Bird Sky” (2022) by Kris Lemsalu, which is part of the Moderna Museet Malmö exhibition “On the Absurd Drama That Is Also Life” (until 25 February this year).
This spring, the Stockholm audience will encounter another new acquisition – Lap-See Lam’s film installation “Floating Sea Palace” (2024). The film will be shown in the exhibition “Fish man, fish man” together with works by Kholod Hawash from 10 May to 24 August 2025 in Moderna Museet’s new exhibition space, which covers 144 square metres.
In October, Moderna Museet will open the exhibition “New Acquisitions and the Art of Collecting” (working title) with Swedish and international artworks that the museum has recently purchased or received as gifts. The exhibition also includes questions about different ways of collecting art. How do we at Moderna Museet think, and how do others? (11 October 2025–17 January 2027)
The Moderna Museet Collection currently includes around 6,000 paintings, sculptures and installations, around 25,000 watercolours, drawings and graphic works, 400 art videos and films, and around 100,000 photographs.
