Malmö

In May, Malmö installed a new public artwork, Fountain by Magnus Thierfelder Tzotzis. Come and listen to a conversation between Thierfelder Tzotzis and artist Christian Andersson, where we’ll learn more about the artwork and the artist’s practice.

ABOUT MAGNUS THIERFELDER TZOTZIS

Working with shifts in scale through clever sculptures is a recurring theme in Magnus Thierfelder Tzotzis’s practice. He finds his motifs in the trivial. With a sensitive eye, he observes our shared existence in public space, collecting distortions in objects and situations that resonate within his installations.

Thierfelder Tzotzis (b. 1976) was educated at the Malmö Art Academy. His work has been exhibited at, among others, Ystad Art Museum, Bonniers Konsthall, and Malmö Art Museum. Magnus Thierfelder Tzotzis lives and works in Malmö.

About Christian Andersson

Christian Andersson, artist (b. 1973), lives and works in Paris, France, and Coimbra, Portugal. He graduated from the Malmö Art Academy in 2001, where he studied at the same time as Thierfelder Tzotzis. Christian will be moderating the conversation during the evening.

Magnus Thierfelder Tzotzis’s works exist right alongside us in our everyday lives—so close that we usually don’t even notice them. They appear in homes and cityscapes, in workplaces, newspapers, and film.

The installation Fountain at Ola Billgren’s Place, just outside the museum entrance, is a perfect example. From between the cobblestones, a tiny stream of water pushes upward in a shy arc, dampening the ground and leaving dark spots around it. Is it a leak—a mishap? Or a small gesture that disrupts the polished order of society? Here, Tzotzis highlights the potential of the anti-monumental, urging us to sharpen our gaze and search for the details in our surroundings. A powerful whisper that transforms the grey everyday into something truly peculiar.
