Two women pioneers of photography
Anna Tellgren, curator of photography and curator of Written in Light, talks about two of the most seminal early photographers: British photographer Julia Margaret Cameron (1815-1879) and the Swedish photographer Rosalie Sjöman (1833-1919).
Nils Strindberg’s photographs
In the name of science, the engineer Salomon August Andrée set off in 1897 for the North Pole. The young photographer Nils Strindberg accompanied him on the expedition. Hear the story of the unique pictures from this failed venture when Tyrone Martinsson talks about Nils Strindberg. Tyrone Martinsson is a researcher, author and lecturer at Gothenburg University. He has written a biography about Nils Strindberg, the photographer on Andrée’s expedition to the North Pole (2006).
Photo albums and photo cultures
Carl Jacob Malmberg’s magnificent albums in the exhibition contain more than 1,000 portraits. Anna Dahlgren, professor of art history at Stockholm University, will explain how the 1850s invention of the photo album expressed the contemporary ambition to collect and organise the world. Her book Ett medium för visuell bildning – Kulturhistoriska perspektiv på fotoalbum 1850–1950 (2013) gives a cultural history perspective on photo albums from 1850–1950, as a medium for visual education. In her presentation, she discusses albums and photographic cultures around 1860 and today.
Gerard Byrne in conversation with Magnus af Petersens
The Irish artist Gerard Byrne talks about his video work Jielemeguvvie guvvie sjisjnjeli with Magnus af Petersens, curator of the exhibition, former curator at Moderna Museet. Jielemeguvvie guvvie sjisjenjeli – Film Inside an Image was recently acquired for the Museum collection. It is shot at the Biological Museum on Djurgården and documents a diorama that features frozen moments from Nordic nature and wildlife. The talk will be in English.
The finissage is organised jointly with the Friends of Moderna Museet.
