Mike Kelley: Ghost and Spirit

12.9 2025

Stockholm

In the second part of “The Extracurriculars”, Hendrik Folkerts, curator of the exhibition “Mike Kelley – Ghost and Spirit”, meets artist Jill Mulleady for a conversation about painting, artistic practice and Mike Kelley’s visual world.

Based on Jill Mulleady’s own practice, Hendrik Folkerts and Mulleady approach parts of Mike Kelley’s visual world – a landscape in which the subconscious, the fearful and the vulnerable take their place.

Mulleady’s paintings explore dreamlike, evocative and sometimes threatening moods, in which art historical and pop cultural references are intertwined. She experiments with different time layers and lets historical motifs face personal and contemporary expressions that move between everyday observations and inner, imaginary worlds.

Her recent solo exhibitions include “Fear of Losing You” at Luma Arles in France (2024), “Bend Towards the Sun” at Gladstone Gallery in New York (2022), “Blood Fog” at Consortium Museum in Dijon (2021), and “Fight-or-Flight” at Swiss Institute in New York (2019).
