Malmö

This Saturday we offer an opportunity to explore the exhibition “The fantastic and terrible – Maria Prymatjenko and works from the Moderna Museet’s collection” in the artist’s native language; Ukrainian! Meet the exhibition in a guided tour conducted by Helena Tomasson, who is an authorized SkåneGuide and holds an MA in visual culture.

Maria Prymachenko (1909–1997) is a central figure in Ukrainian art history and one of the country’s most well-known and appreciated artists. Her motif has appeared on postage stamps and a planetoid has been named after her. The stylized but at the same time playful patterns have their origins in folk embroidery and traditional crafts.

Participating artists: Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Lena Cronqvist, Lourdes Fernandez, Susanna Marcus Jablonski, Asger Jorn, Runo Lagomarsino, Lou Laurin-Lam, Egon Möller-Nielsen, Amelia Peláez del Casal, Pablo Picasso, Lars Pirak, Niki de Saint Phalle , Marija Prymatjenko, Max Walter Swanberg, Adja Yunkers.

In the exhibition, Maria Prymachenko ‘s paintings meet artworks from the Moderna Museet’s collection from the 20th century and works by two contemporary artists, Runo Lagomarsino and Susanna Marcus Jablonski. Artists such as Marc Chagall, Egon Möller-Nielsen, Niki de Saint Phalle, Lou Laurin-Lam and Pablo Picasso reinforce the presence of myth, metamorphosis and stories. Together, the artworks make up a colorful dirge.

Paintings on paper became Maria Prymachenko ‘s main means of expression and now more than 40 of her works created over 50 years are presented. She painted flamboyant flowers, fantastic creatures and mixed reality and fantasy, everyday life and party. Her pictures bear traces of sadness and pain.
