Explosion! Painting as Action, Moderna Museet’s major summer exhibition, is soon ending. Thousands of people from all over the world have seen it. Come to the finale and see art in the borderland between painting and performance, attend performances, take part in discussions and voice your questions! The fascination for performance art appears to be growing, along with interest in its history and its position in the hierarchy of art.
This exhibition was produced by Moderna Museet and will tour to Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona. We are therefore especially pleased that three Catalan artists will be present at our finale: Ignasi Aballí, Àngels Ribé, and Eulalia Valldosera. Explosion! was the first exhibition in Sweden in which these artists have participated. They will present their own works and discuss different aspects of concept, composition and action, with freelance curator Martí Manen.
John Cage is one of the artists featured in the exhibition. He would have been his 100 on 5 September. The composers and pianists Eva Sidén and Bunita Marcus, New York, will contribute an insightful music programme and a discussion on his music. Eva Sidén, Birgitta Muhr, visual artist, and Jens Hedman, sound artist, will jointly perform their concert installation Double Bind Player at Moderna Museet on 1-9 September. Bunita Marcus collaborated for many years with the musician Morton Feldman. She was also a close friend of John Cage. She has received several awards for her music and has composed pieces for the Kronos Quartet, Aki Takahashi, Xenakis Ensemble, and many others. Between 1985 and 1990, she produced the Salon Concert series, together with the artist Francesco Clemente in New York City.
Artists connected to Fylkingen will create installations and give concerts and performances as part of the week-long celebration of John Cage at Moderna Museet and in the Bucky Dome. Participating artists: Robin McGinley, Kent Tankred, The Great Learning Orchestra and WOL, which consists of the artists Wenche Tankred and Lovisa Johansson.
Curators, events: Catrin Lundqvist and Karin Malmquist. Curator, exhibition: Magnus af Petersens. Assistant curator: Matilda Olof-Ors. Guest producer: Fylkingen/Per Åhlund.
