Before and Behind the Lens

Photography, discussions and themed tours

1.1 – 31.12 2017

Take a walk through the history of photography and discover its many styles and transformations. Experience photography in exhibitions, artist talks and guided tours, in Before and Behind the Lens.

150 years of photography

See photography-based art from the past 150 years: 19th-century photography is featured in the exhibition Written in Light – The First Photographers, while an entirely new video work by Loulou Cherinet is shown on floor 4. Next door to contemporary photography that was recently acquired by the Museum (works by Julia Peirone, Linda Hofvander, Tova Mozard and others, in the exhibition Golden Sunset), you will find modern classics by artists such as Nan Goldin, Robert Mapplethorpe, Anders Petersen, Annika von Hausswolff, Cindy Sherman, Tuija Lindström, Sally Mann, Duane Michaels and Francesca Woodman. To name but a few.

The role of photography in art

This photography project gives you the opportunity to study the role of photography in art, and how the medium has changed from the 19th century experiments to today’s explorations of the potential of photographic technology. Temporary exhibitions, guided tours and presentations of the collection will give an in-depth understanding of the development of photography.

Pioneers of photography in the Museum collection.

Moderna Museet has one of Europe’s finest collections of photography, ranging from pioneers such as Julia Margaret Cameron to many of the most influential contemporary artists who visualise the world for us with the camera lens.
