During the final week of the exhibition REDOUBT, an early work by the artist and filmmaker John Skoog, Late on Earth from 2011, will be shown at the Loading Dock. The film is part of the collection of Moderna Museet.

“Late on Earth” takes its title from Gunnar Ekelöf’s debut collection of poetry, published in 1932. The title might equally serve as a collective designation for much of John Skoog’s film practice, filmed at dusk in and around the village of Kvidinge in north-western Scania.

These films carry a quiet sense of foreboding – a feeling that something is about to change, that a shift is imminent, and that we find ourselves in a state of transition.

The gathering darkness propels the narrative forward. It is late on earth – for the humans and animals that inhabit these films, but also in a broader ecological sense.

Collaboration is central to John Skoog’s practice, as is a close dialogue with place and with the people both in front of and behind the camera. Ita Zbroniec Zajt, Ernst and Aron Skoog, David Gülich and Martin Martinsen all contributed to “Late on Earth” and have also contributed to REDOUBT.
