Katalin Ladik’s Graphic Score

Lecture

Stockholm

Take a deep dive into the experimental sound art of Katalin Ladik and explore her graphic score during a lecture with Daniel Muzyczuk, curator and acting museum director at Muzeum Sztuki in Łódź. Katalin Ladik is a pioneer in experimental poetry, sound and performance art in Central and Eastern Europe and is currently presented in the exhibition “Oooooooooo-pus”.

Language is the heart of Katalin Ladik’s art. Her sound poetry takes shape through scores, visual collages and sonic poems, and both the body and voice are used as instruments, tools and materials in the exploration of language. In “Ooooooooo-pus”, you can experience Ladik’s collage-based graphic scores – visual works and sheet music consisting of symbols that can be translated into live sound performances, which can also be performed on recurring occasions. In the works’ search for new linguistic registers, the role between composer/visual artist, performer and listener becomes fluid and expansive.

It is also possible to read characteristics in the score that correspond to other graphically notated works and artists from Eastern Europe. During the lecture, Daniel Muzyczuk will talk about these characteristics and the significance of Katalin Ladik’s work in relation to the Eastern European avant-garde. We will hear more about the embodiment of political and division of labour aspects, and about artists who worked within the tradition, such as Andrzej Partum, Ewa Partum, Milan Grygar, Eugeniusz Rudnik, Milan Knižàk and Andrzej Mitan.
