Fernando Botero

29.9 2001 – 13.1 2002

Stockholm

For the first time, the autumn 2001, Fernando Botero’s (b.1932) paintings are shown in Sweden and at Moderna Museet. The exhibition, produced in close collaboration with director David Elliott and Fernando Botero himself, will then travel to several museums in USA.

Fernado Botero is the most famous Colombian artist on the international scene. His fame is based on his naïve portraits of rotund men, women, animals and still lifes. The paintings, not seldom paraphrases of famous art-historical pieces, radiate a peculiar stillness and mild satire. In his paintings we can make acquaintances with Italian Renaissance princes, Latin matrons, bull fighters, genial transvestites and charming girls. Due to his family’s high position in society, Botero could freely hackle the corrupt ruling class of his country in his gentle and sophisticated ways.

Moderna Museet is also delighted to be able to , thanks to the Stockholm City Art Council and the Colombian Embassy, show Botero’s large scale sculptures at Strandvägen during the exhibition.

In connection to the exhibition Moderna Museet will arrange activities such as seminars, music and food.

Curator: David Elliott
