My Name is Oona

Gunvor Grundel Nelson went to the USA in the 1950s to study. Today she is considered one of the seminal figures of avant garde film in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she has been teaching film studies since 1970.

Her early works are a critique against the stereotype perception of women in commercial culture that dominated America in the 1960s, not least in cinema. My Name is Oona (1969) is an evocative film featuring a little girl, the artist’s daughter. The film is edited and rhythmically composed to accompany a simple spoken phrase that is repeated and looped in a minimalist pattern. My Name is Oona is a cinematic voyage between inner and outer worlds, between the safe and familiar and the frightening unknown. With grateful acknowledgement to Filmform and Re:Voir, Paris
