Per Wizén’s large-scale photographs are based on collages. They consist of tens of thousands of fragments that the artist puts together through complex processes over a long period of time.
The works in the exhibition have been added after a journey into the artist’s own childhood, activated by an attic find of long-forgotten Disney magazines from the 1970s. Through a lens of popular culture images, Wizén invites us into colourful fantasies based on Disney’s versions of Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan. What both figures have in common is that they encounter worlds that lie beyond the known, enlightened rational – worlds of possibilities but also of darkness.
New contexts are formed based on existing images. Adventure stories and a return to one’s own childhood form ambiguous layers in these new works, but beneath the innocent and playful surface lurks something uncanny.
