Collecting has appeared before in Annika Eriksson’s work. Over a period of two years she received twelve postal packets from her mother. They contained most of what a traditional housewife would need – for instance, cake forms, recipes, dish rags, cleaning agents, Christmas decorations. Annika Eriksson has gathered together these small ‘collections’ under the title Twelve Packages From My Mother (1993-95). Most of her work is produced in collaboration with others and takes a long time to prepare. The two video installations, Copenhagen Postmen Orchestra and Stockholm Postmen Orchestra were made in co-operation with the two orchestras that performed the piece “Sour Time” by the group Portishead, which was chosen by the artist. In the work Construction, three carpenters built a ‘construction’ according to the artist’s rudimentary drawings.
At the heart of Annika Eriksson’s art lies an interest in human relations – between women and men, young and old, children and parents. Her work deals with social role-plays and power hierarchies. Her point of departure is often real experiences, events that she has observed and then transforms into somewhat bizarre objects, pictures, performances and situations.
Annika Eriksson was born in 1956 in Malmö. She has had a separate exhibition at Andréhn-Schiptjenko in Stockholm (1996) and participated in group exhibitions like Nowhere at Louisiana (1996), Come and See Us – I am Curious at the Independent Art Space in London (1996), Letter and Event at Apex Art in New York (1997) and X-squared at Wiener Secession (1997). At the moment her work, Die Silberlocken spielen die Bremer Stadtmusikanten, a collaboration with the female theatre amateur group Die Silberlocken, is being shown in the exhibition Do All Oceans Have Walls? in Bremen.
Between 12.00 and 15.00, Sundays 14 June, 12 July and 9 August the association of collectors, Samlarförbundet Nordstjärnan (North Star) and Annika Eriksson will be having meetings outside Prästgården on Skeppsholmen.
In conjunction with each Moderna Museet Projekt a documentary catalogue will be produced and will be available shortly after the opening.
