Treasures from Vitön

Photographs from the Andrée expedition

2.9 2000 – 4.2 2001

Stockholm

1897 Salomon Andrée, Knut Fraenkel and Nils Strindberg tried to rach the North Pole in a balloon called the eagle. The three of them died and their bodies and belongings were buried in the ice. 1930 their bodies and belongings were found at the island of Vitön and were brought back to Stockholm.

Also found were some photographic negatives but in very bad shape. In Stockholm the photographer and scientist, John Hertzberg of Royal Technical University printed some of these photographs. The photographs arer in the possession of Moderna Museet and are now all shown in the museum for the first time.
