The nude – one classic theme in the history of photography Photography as a medium has given us perhaps the most profound impact on our perception of the human body. While the attitude and artistic language of the photographer has undergone change over the years, our fascination for the human body has always existed and consequently resulted in numerous images.

This exhibition features photographs from Moderna Museet’s collection. They are witness to a variety of viewpoints, thoughts, and feelings – the image as personal memento, ethnological documentation, pictorial interpretation, aesthetic testimony, surrealistic study, nationalistic propaganda, explorative personal study, or erotic stimulant.

One also encounters formalistic arrangement, as in the work of Osamu Shiihara (1905-1974) and Todd Walker (b. 1917) or inquisitive investigation into photographic materials and technique such as hand-colouring by Antonio Beato (c.1830-c.1904), pigment/bicromat photography by Henry B. Goodwin (1878-1931), high-key by Curt Götlin (1900-1993), platinotype by Irving Penn (b. 1917), photogravure by Tuija Lindström (b.1950), and the digital print as by Nobuyoshi Araki (b. 1940).
