Bubblenight
Time: Gallerinatten 26 september at 6 pm – 12 am
Place: Moderna Museet Malmö, Gasverksgatan 22
Three months before the grand inauguration in December, Moderna Museet Malmö will arrange its first public event. As a part of Gallerinatten on September 26 we give you an opportunity to mingle in a large-scale plastic bubble outside the museum – in the middle of the ongoing building process.
The plastic bubble that will be placed on the street outside of the museum is a spectacular architectural structure and an experience in itself, designed and manufactured by Plastique Fantastique. Besides mingling, there will be food and drinks inside the bubble. Friends of Moderna Museet are in place ready to sign memberships and there will be plenty of information about the new museum.
In one part of the plastic bubble, that has entered the building, the video Speech Bubble by American artist Adam Leech is shown. Here we encounter a salesman, seemingly existing in an indefinable, infinite space. The thin membrane that once defined his reality and made it graspable, has burst. What remains are small particles and fragments whirling around. We hear two voices, the voice of the man and the voice of a woman. The two speak to each other, against each other and past each other.
The main concerns of Adam Leech’s work are the semantics of voice versus speech and the political engineering of public space and community. Speech Bubble began as an investigation into the bankruptcy of the Belgian high-tech speech recognition company, Lernout & Hauspie. Like other multinational corporations, Lernout & Hauspie was a visionary company where money, techno-utopias and the cult of the entrepreneurial personality helped to create a now ubiquitous “market bubble”. A bubble that in year 2001 suddenly burst.
