Inauguration with Museum Director Gitte Ørskou at 11.30

Museum Director Gitte Ørskou will inaugurate the new collection presentation at 11.30 in the foyer, then you are welcome to come along on guided tours or listen to presentations in the Cinema all day.

The entire program hour by hour

What is a new presentation of the collection?

The Moderna Museet collection comprises some 140,000 works of art. Since we cannot display them all at once we regularly re-hang works in the museum. In 2019, we have done extensive re-hanging where more historical and contemporary stories have the chance to emerge. To a greater extent than before, art is now shown in thematic presentations that highlight partially new contexts. After a long period of re-hanging, all rooms are now open again – welcome to celebrate the new presentation of the collection with us!

There are works on display by for example Hilma af Klint, Kazimir Malevitj, Ferdinand Legér, Ola Pehrson, Galina Moskaleva, Aleksandr Rodtjenko, Marina Abramovi´c, Ellen Gallagher, Truls Melin, Katarina Pirak Sikku, Sigrid Hjertén, Anna Riwkin, Kajsa Dahlberg, Sven X-et Erixson, Imogen Cunningham, Paul Strand, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, David Hammons, Marcel Duchamp, Julia Pirotte, Adrian Villar Rojas and Vija Celmins.

The new presentation is based on overall themes and the different rooms have titles such as “A Room of One’s Own”, “Collage and Assemblage”, “After The Wall”, “Spheres of Abstraction” and “Together”, to name a few.

  • On the 2nd floor, we will open up our workshops for children and adults. We will cut and paste and create futuristic collages all day long.

What does a conservator do?

At 13.30 and at 15.30. In the collection. Ca 25 min.

Listen when the conservators Thérèse Lilliegren and Tora Hederus share their work with the large and complicated artwork “Los teatros de Saturno III, From the series Fantasma (Ghost)” by Adrián Villar Rojas. They will talk about everything from conservation ethics to oxygen-free storage and will, of course, give a background to the artwork as well.

Our conservators work to preserve and document all the varying types of art in the museum collection. The role and mandate of Moderna Museet is not just to exhibit art but also to ensure that the works are taken care of in the best way possible, both when they are installed on public show and when they are in the museum stores. When you see the work of artists in and around the exhibition spaces only a small fraction of the conservators’ work is visible.

Guided tours and presentations – learn more!

At every hour, you will be able to follow along with curators and other experts on guided tours and presentations of everything from the history of the museum to the new rooms in the collection. The presentations and most of the guided tours are in Swedish.
