The Moderna Museet collection holds some 70 photographs by the South African photographer Ernest Cole (1940–1990) on view from March in the permanent collection. He had to leave his country in order to publish the book House of Bondage in 1967, where he portrayed experiences of black people negotiating their lives through the racial segregation laws of apartheid. The book was immediately banned in South Africa and forcing Cole to spend the rest of his life in exile. In the beginning of the 1970s he visited Sweden and his work was displayed in exhibitions in Stockholm and Gothenburg. Through his colleagues in the group Tio fotografer (Ten photographers) parts of Ernest Cole’s photographs were later donated to the Hasselblad Foundation and Moderna Museet.

Anna Tellgren, Curator of Photography at Moderna Museet, presents Ernest Cole’s photographs. Rangoato Hlasane and David Andrew, from Wits School of Arts, give from their own practices a background to South African photography in the 1960s. The discussion is led by Anette Göthlund, Professor at Department of Visual Arts Education, Konstfack, University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, Stockholm.

Rangoato Hlasane is lecturer at Wits School of Arts, a cultural worker, writer, illustrator, DJ and educator based in Johannesburg, South Africa. He holds a master degree from the University of Johannesburg’s Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture. He is the co-founder of Keleketla! Library, an independent and interdisciplinary library based in Joubert Park, Johannesburg. He has presented sonic talks at events such as the “10 Cities” public sphere symposium and concert in Kenya, “Year After Zero” conference in Germany and the education symposium of the 9th Bienal do Mercosul in Brazil.

David Andrew is an artist and professor at Wits School of Arts, Wits University, Johannesburg, South Africa. Professor David Andrew, PhD in 2012 from Wits University is also an artist. His interest in the artist-teacher relationship has resulted in a number of projects aimed at researching, designing and implementing alternative paths for the training of arts educators and artists working in schools. Current research interests include the tracking of histories of arts education in South Africa and southern Africa more broadly; a collaborative project mapping arts education policies and practices across the African continent.
