Daniel Birnbaum and Hans Ulrich Obrist

On Museums and Exhibitions on the Move

A conversation with Hans Ulrich Obrist and Daniel Birnbaum

8.2 2019

Stockholm

Meet Daniel Birnbaum, Moderna Museet’s director up until December 2018, and Hans Ulrich Obrist, artistic director of the Serpentine Galleries in London, in a conversation about museums and exhibitions on the move.

New book as a point of departure

Daniel Birnbaum and Hans Ulrich Obrist meet in a conversation on the newly published book ”A plurality of tongues: Giving direction to the museum” (Moderna Museet and Koenig Books, 2019) that highlights some of the thematic threads that run through the programmes of Moderna Museet. These include an attentiveness to diversities and to alternative modernisms as well as to the great contributions of women artists.

Another interest concerns the interplay between artforms: music, film, dance poetry, design, architecture, and all the disciplines that we subsume under the notion of visual art. A further leitmotif is the speculative power of the exhibition as a format and its capacity to activate the past. The primary focus of our activities is not only the works of art, but the artists themselves.

Daniel Birnbaum was the director of Moderna Museet November 2010–December 2018. Hans Ulrich Obrist is the artistic director of the Serpentine Galleries in London.
