Film screening with Gunvor Nelson, 18 August

Gunvor Nelson, My Name is Oona, 1969. 16 mm, 10 min.

For one month (18 August-19 September) we will be showing films from the Moderna Museet collection by artist and experimental film-maker Gunvor Nelson. The films Schmeerguntz (1966), My Name is Oona (1969) and Take Off (1972) will be screened in the new gallery as an extension of the permanent collection exhibition, Spectacular Times.

Gunvor Nelson is a film-maker with an international reputation for experimental and art films. She was born in 1931 in Stockholm, but grew up in Kristinehamn. In year 1950 she moved back to Stockholm, where she attended the Stockholm University College of Arts, Crafts and Design (Konstfack) and later Beckmans College of Design. After graduating, she moved to the USA. Nelson began using the film camera as an artistic tool early in her career, and following her debut film, Schmeerguntz in 1966, she became one of the key figures in the avant-garde film movement that emerged in California in the 1960s. She subsequently held a professorship at the San Francisco Art Institute until the mid-1990s, when she returned to Sweden and settled in Kristinehamn. In recent years, she has resumed making films, with digital video as her new medium.
