Francesco Vezzolis konstnärskap handlar mycket om hur människor både framställer sig i och framställs av medierna. Inte sällan skymtar han själv fram i verken. Men vem är han egentligen och varför alla dessa kvinnor? Utställningens curator John Peter Nilsson bytte några ord med honom.

John Peter Nilsson: Du föddes i italienska Brescia 1971. Berätta lite om din uppväxt och familjebakgrund.

Francesco Vezzoli: Jag växte upp med mycket liberala föräldrar och tillbringade mycket tid med min far- och mormor, den ena arbetarklass och den andra mer borgerlig, samt två äldre fastrar. Alla kvinnor…

JPN: Broderi spelar en viktig roll i ditt konstnärskap. Redan när du studerade på Central St. Martin’s School of Art i London mellan 1992 och 1995 gjorde du ett broderat porträtt av gay porrstjärnan Jeff Stryker, ett okonventionellt motiv!? Träffade du honom?

FV: Tyvärr inte…

JPN: Berätta lite om din besatthet av åldrade kvinnliga divor. Vad har de mer gemensamt än att de är kvinnor som förefaller ha förlorat sin tidigare betydelse därför att de har blivit gamla?

FV: Konstnärer är själva divor och precis som skådespelerskor rädda för att åldras. Kanske såg jag i de tårfyllda ögonen en spegling av mina egna rädslor…

JPN: Hur lyckas du beveka celebriteterna du samarbetar med, inklusive alla ”bakom scenen”-människorna som du också inkorporerar i dina produktioner?

FV: Jag skickar blommor och brev, men för det mesta är det mötet på tu man hand som bryter isen. Än så länge har jag varit lyckligt lottad, kanske för att ”stjärnorna” kände att projekten var uppriktigt ”anpassade” till deras identiteter på och utanför scenen.

JPN: Till sist, varför är Prinsessan Caroline lämplig att framträda som Drottning Kristina?

FV: Därför att hon är den ultimata korsningen mellan verklig kungamakt och Hollywoods kungamakt. Prinsessan Caroline är den ideala kandidaten att framträda som vad som helt, inte minst att framträda som en drottning likt Kristina som ju under sin egen tid hade modet att offentligt utmana likriktning och den allmänna opinionen.
