Le jardin by Henri Matisse back at Moderna Museet!
The painting was returned from London to Moderna Museet on 22 January, 2013, after a theft that occurred in May 1987. As soon as conservators have finished their inspection of the painting, it will be shown at the Museum. The Swedish public will once more be able to enjoy the work!
Daniel Birnbaum, director of Moderna Museet, comments:
“At long last, Moderna Museet’s visitors can see Le jardin again. This is a joyful reunion, a happy day for us all. We look forward to displaying Le jardin in our exhibition at the Museum in Stockholm and welcome all our visitors to come and see this great work by Matisse. A great day for all art lovers in Sweden.”
Background
The painting Le jardin by Henri Matisse from 1920 was donated by Mrs Nora Lundgren to Moderna Museet on 15 November, 1977. On 11 May, 1987, the painting was stolen from Moderna Museet, and has been gone since then. Just before Christmas 2012, Daniel Birnbaum, director of Moderna Museet, was contacted by Christopher A. Marinello of the Art Loss Register in London, who informed him that they had retrieved a work that corresponded to the description of the missing Matisse painting.
