Global Programming and Museums of Modern Art

European and American institutions’ claims of having comprehensive acquisition policies for their collections need to be reviewed, put into context, and challenged in light of the frequently different self-understanding and identification of non-Western institutions. This also applies to museum programming, although a closer study of the history of modernist art museums in the West shows that they have been guided by a complex agenda that can offer correspondences with today’s internationally diversified curatorial practices.

The conference highlights the historiography of what the critic and curator Okwui Enwezor calls “art from elsewhere”, and takes a closer look at various post-colonially oriented projects initiated by, for example, Tate Modern, Moderna Museet and the Stedelijk Museum. The conference is hosted by the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, and is organised jointly by the Stedelijk Museum and the ASCA/ACGS University of Amsterdam, together with Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Folkwang Museum, Essen, and Tropen Museum, Amsterdam.
