Welcome Daniel Birnbaum!

On 1 November, Daniel Birnbaum starts as Director of Moderna Museet.

Commenting on his appointment in May 2010, Daniel Birnbaum said: “I am very happy and honoured to have been appointed director of Moderna Museet. This is a museum I grew up with, and where I first encountered modern and contemporary art. I am humbled by the fantastic history of the museum and its strong reputation today, as the most influential museum in its field, in Sweden and the entire Nordic region, and also as a key institution in the broader international perspective.”

Daniel Birnbaum was until recently the director of Städelschule in Frankfurt, Germany, where he also has a professorship. He has a PhD in philosophy and is an internationally established critic, writing for publications such as Artforum. He was previously an art critic for Dagens Nyheter, the director of Iaspis, and curator and director of several major international exhibitions and biennials, including the 2009 Venice Biennale.

Daniel Birnbaum will head Moderna Museet with co-director Ann-Sofi Noring as his nearest associate. Ann-Sofi Noring has worked for Moderna Museet since November 2001, most recently as deputy director, chief curator.
