Components such as shadows without sources of light or chairs that change colour conflict with what we can conceive of as possible. In the disparity between what viewers actually see with their own eyes and what we consider possible, Andersson creates a sense of uncertainty around the structures that underlie our judgement of the concept of reality. Having revealed the trick, viewers have to reformulate their view of the truth and re-establish a notion of reality that works.
No one would nowadays question the idea that our experience of the world around us, as it is presented in the media, is constructed, manipulated and fragmented. Our belief in reality has been undermined as a result and the only certainty remaining appears to be belief in the individual’s physical experience of the surrounding world. Andersson destabilises even this last redoubt. In Verket 1:1 (The Work 1:1) he captures a brick in motion as it is pushed through the wall. The brick, like the splinter from the wall, find themselves in a frozen moment as they are thrown through the air.
